As may be seen from the enclosed plan certain village lots were situated within the area now held by Messrs. Butterfield and Swire. These lots were acquired by private pur- -chase by Messrs. Butterfield and Swire and included in Q.B.M.L. No. 2. Some of the village lot leases were for 21 years.

.42.77 acres.

The three first-mentioned lots are all held on 999 years leases. The areas involved in the Petitioners' application are therefore small (6.11 acres in all) in comparison with those for which the leases were extended in the case of the Taikoo Shipyard (43.41 acres).

The two lots Nos. 256 and 24 are occupied by large workshops which cost between $300,000 and $400,000. The area comprised in H.H.M.L. No. 3 is the only portion of the property not developed. The Company paid $36,124 in premium for this lot

and pay annually a Crown Rent of £1,290 in respect of it.

On the other hand the correspondence to which I have referred in paragraph 5 shows that 999 years' leases

were granted for M.L. No. 3 and for the extension to M.L. No. 2

in consideration of the undertaking of Messrs. Butterfield and Swire to construct thereon a large dry dock, at a cost of

£250,000 and in conformity with Admiralty requirements, and 2

large slips. The area occupied by the dry dock and slips con- -stitute, however, a comparatively small portion of the whole area and the extension of the lease to 999 years was not limited
